help me please?

Post by shadow00707 » May 24th, 2012, 6:36 pm

i am looking at buying this jeep. if i did, how much would it be to fix up cosmetically? i plan to make it a JP jeep, but not exactly with interior and what-not. mainly just paint, wheels, that sort of thing. more of just a tribute than a replica for now. but how much am i gonna have to get done to it? i am 17 by the way this will be my first car. i am in between this one for $2500, and a white one thats in an average condition for 5000. is it worth it to buy the 2500 one and fix it up?

Always get the best Jeep you can for the price. A JP Jeep with mechanical issues will cost the same to fix as a regular Jeep so invest in the Jeep...not the paintwork.

If the Jeep above is mechanically sound with little to no frame rust and just looks awful then I'd say go for it because you'll be re-working the bodywork anyway.
However if the engine and mechanics are shot and the rust we see is all over the frame...you're just going to spend money on a Jeep that's on its way out.

Don't rush into getting the Jeep, there are plenty in most parts of the country and they vary A LOT in condition.

As for pricing....it sounds like the paintwork will be your biggest cost so I'd say budget about $1,500 - $2,000 for it all. If its less; GREAT! You can then use that for the other parts....but please don't paint a rust bucket...paint a Jeep that's going to last!!

thanks for the advice. according to the description it is mechanically sound, and the rust is not everywhere. here is the secondary choice, double the price. i am also thinking i could talk them down to 4500, or if i am lucky, 4000 solid. what do you guys think?

I'd say they are both bad choices. Waaaay too much to swap up on the first one and waaaay too much to take off of the second to get your JP Jeep just right.

I say look at both, closely, and write down everything you notice. Then wait until the right Jeep comes along.

I've always said the hardest part about building a JP Jeep is waiting for the right Jeep. There's tons of replicas out there now, but you can really tell the difference between the people that couldn't wait and just grabbed a Jeep (like me), and people that waited for the right Sahara to pop up.

You'll be glad you did.

i see what you're saying. and you are right, here is the issue. i have one month to find a jeep. because in july i leave to college for drumline camp. and i really do want to wait for the perfect jeep, i just need to get something and work with it. and YJ's aren't exactly plentiful in southern mississippi. you know? this one was exactly what i wanted except for color, and i let it slip. it was only 4000 :(

I also recommend waiting. Buying a car is not a small purchase, you want to make sure you don't get stuck with something that's going to cost you high in repairs.

My Jeep was mechanically sound when I got it, but I had to replace parts here and there and that put a small dent in the Jeep project overall.

if you are needing or wanting to get one sooner than later i would go with the black one.
fine out if it is in good running order
is the tub and frame in good shape
if yes go for it. you have to remember you are about to own a JEEP there is a little saying you should know "JEEP Just Empty Every Pocket" you can make some money off that one to go for parts the wheels look like they are 15 inch cregger weels you could get about 100 bucks for the wheels maybe more the front bumper it looks to be a SmittyBilt SRC bumper you could sell it maybe 175.

but for parts you can try local JEEP clubs and jeep forums for parts people are always upgrading parts and tend to sell there old OEM stuff cheep at times if you need help finding parts drop me a line i have been able to find good parts for good prices at times

Seriously. Pulling off someone else's shitty fab welds or removing a lift or trying to sell full doors while looking for half doors is not just going to be a bitch, it's going to be INCREDIBLY expensive.

This is not us telling you what to do or shaking our fingers doubting you. This is not us telling you to accept mediocrity instead of blazing glory. This is a mountain of experience saying, "You will be SO MUCH HAPPIER if you jump on the right Jeep and do it right from the beginning."

Boomer speaks the truth. It would be wise to listen.
