Hey guys! I have begun preliminary work on my Jeep, which includes repainting the bumpers, fixing the horn (faulty ground wire), replacing the windshield bumpers, and windshield wiper arms. The Jeep is a '95 6 cylinder, 4.0L, 5 speed manual. She's in great shape with virtually no rust! 118k miles. I am planning to mainly focus on the exterior first, and then do interior work further down the line.

Fortunately, I have some band parents (I'm a band director) that own a body shop and have agreed to help me the with the painting.

Many thanks! After perusing the forums here for a few months, I heeded the advice by several members, which was to be patient. After seeing this Jeep for sale on the net, it indeed seemed to be a great candidate, so I headed out to Colorado (borrowing my Dad-in-Law's F-150 and trailer) and it really was in great shape and quite clean!

I took it down to the body shop today of the folks I know that are going to help me (band parents, whose son to is an exceptional band student, BTW! ), and talked with them about the details of the painting, showing them several pics of JP Jeeps. Tim had even done some searching on his own and found these forums! So hopefully in a few weeks, we'll get things rolling!

Great find! I didn't think they made the Sahara in red, but see you have the running boards so I guess it is one. Great to see another JP Jeep in West Tennessee. We have two in Clarksville now, my #18 and Kris Peter's #29. In fact we will be making a display at a big park in Clarksville that will have an outdoor movie showing of Jurassic World on the second Saturday in October. You are welcome to come with your jeep too if you are ready. The attached image is of my jeep last fall near your location - at a little convention in Jackson,TN.

Many thanks for the invite! I'm not sure if my Jeep will be ready by then, but that would indeed be a weekend I could come. I teach band, and several Saturday's in the Fall I take my band to Marching Competitions. However, that weekend happens to be our Fall Break! I'll keep you updated as to the progress of my Jeep and if it's ready, I'd love to attend!

Well, I heard back from my band parents yesterday in terms of the cost of the paintwork, and it's far more expensive than I was hoping for. So, I would like to consider other options. I know many here on the forums have painted their own Jeep, and I must admit, I'm a bit apprehensive about attempting that; not to mention I really don't have the equipment or facilities to paint a car.

Anyone have any suggestions? If I think I could pull off my own paint job I might attempt it, but I'm not even sure what equipment I need, where to buy paint, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated...

Since your are starting with a red jeep just like I did, it makes it a lot easier as you really don't have to paint that part. I painted the rest tof mine with spray cans. You can order the exact color 'metallic sand beige' from one of those companies that sells touch up paint on the internet. Type in 1992 YJ Wrangler Sahara and you will see the right color and it won't take that much if you just leave the red parts red. You will have to buy some red as well to go over the rubber extensions on the fenders, and the wheels. Most of the paint companies sell a special clear primer spray to make the paint stick better to the rubber.

You can order the emblems and number stencils off of eBay. There may be someone in the sales section here on the forum that sells them also.

You could probably paint it in any garage, just move out any other cars inside. A warm dry day is better than a rainy day. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the info! While I had stumbled upon that site before, I did't realize you could order the paint in spray cans, which is something I certainly feel I can handle! And yes, I was hoping to keep the red for those portions of my jeep that should be red.

With that said, I'm curious as to what differences one might see in the finish between using aerosol spray cans and using a pressure sprayer. Also, while I know I would need to sand the areas I want to paint beige, am I correct in thinking I should use a sand-able primer before painting?

Is there a low-gloss clear coat available?

I believe you can get nearly as good a finish with spray cans if you can do it indoors. The aerosol seems droplets are finer with a spray gun but it is probably a small price to pay if you are on a budget. Yes they do have top coats too, and I think a low gloss one. If not, they are available in spray can from other sources.

If you have sanded and primed the red areas that need to be covered, I don't think you'd need to sand the primed areas too.
