alright so i got my jeep a few weeks ago,i payed $1700 for it. its an 88 with about 177k. its runs ok but is very loud because the exhaust is broken just before the catalytic converter. i dont plan on getting it painted like a jp jeep for a year or so because i have other things to work on first. the engine is the 4.2l with 5 speed manual transmission. i plan on having the trans rebuilt sooner or later.

i had the windshield down to replace the cowl seal.


today i sanded the rust off the floor panel under and around the drivers seat then sprayed primer on it

I'm amazed by the lack of rust!

A great looking Jeep to start out with.

Don't forget to seal that primer with a paint or liner.

i think im going to primer the rest of the tub then use the blue paint i got with it to match the blue. i really want to herculine it sometime though

there is also some pretty bad rust on the tail gate, im getting that tomorrow. hopefully its easier then the floor was

Its true, I just learned last week that primer is porous and will soak up water.

I always thought that if you had a coat of primer on something it would be fine, but nope.

I have had some really good results with POR15 in these moderate to severe surface rust applications. I have a local source in Atlanta, but it can be found online. Basically you brush it on like paint let it dry and harden then you can skim coat with bondo or whatever filler and it won't bubble back up after a year. I have rebuilt several WWII/Korea/Vietnam era rustbucket 1/4 ton trailers and that works great. Normal primer doesn't bond with the rust like POR15 does. A quart goes a long way, it applies very thin.

On frame/underbody applications I don't even topcoat the POR15. The semigloss looks really good.

Nice Jeep BTW: that pretty clean for an 88. Another consideration if you want to redo the tranny is get a AX15 from a later model YJ/TJ/XJ and perform a swap. Its pretty straightforward and requires little retrofitting. Not to mention almost any Jeep with a 6cyl had an AX15, its a little stronger with a 1 piece case and external slave cyl for maintenance.

yesterday i sanded the tailgate down, got all the rust off and primerd it. then i took out all of the interior because im going to sand down the rest of the tub and primer it. today i took off the side steps only to find more rust, one spot lead to a decent size hole. so tomorrow im going to bondo that hole paint the tail gate and sand down the tub, possibly primer the rest of the tub. i wanted to have the interior back in by the end of today but that didnt happen =/
